Future economic damage from tropical cyclones: sensitivities to societal and climate changes.
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper examines future economic damages from tropical cyclones under a range of assumptions about societal change, climate change and the relationship of climate change to damage in 2050. It finds in all cases that efforts to reduce vulnerability to losses, often called climate adaptation, have far greater potential effectiveness to reduce damage related to tropical cyclones than efforts to modulate the behaviour of storms through greenhouse gas emissions reduction policies, typically called climate mitigation and achieved through energy policies. The paper urges caution in using economic losses of tropical cyclones as justification for action on energy policies when far more potentially effective options are available.

IN HIS VIEWPOINT “INSURANCE IN A CLIMATE OF change” (12 Aug., p. 1040), E. Mills suggests that changes in climate have been responsible for some part of the trend in recent decades of increasing damage related to extreme weather. This claim is not supported by the peer-reviewed literature, including the most recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (1). Over recent ...
متن کاملObservational evidence supports the role of tropical cyclones in regulating climate.
Tropical cyclones are relatively rare weather events, yet they consistently rank among the world’s deadliest and costliest natural hazards. In the United States, tropical cyclones account for nearly $10 billion annually in economic damages (1), and damages from Hurricane Sandy (2012) are estimated to be over $50 billion. Understanding the role of these events within Earth’s climate system is of...
متن کاملThe impact of socio-economics and climate change on tropical cyclone losses in the USA
Tropical cyclones that make landfall on the coast of the USA are causing increasing economic losses. It is assumed that the increase in losses is largely due to socio-economic developments, i.e. growing wealth and greater settlement of exposed areas. However, it is also thought that the rise in losses is caused by increasing frequency of severe cyclones resulting from climate change, whether du...
متن کاملPrepared for Workshop on Climate Change and Disaster Losses : Understanding and Attribution Trends and Projections
Climate change is real, and has a significant human component related to greenhouse gases, as summarized by the IPCC’s Working Group I. Nothing in this white paper contradicts this work. • Global disaster losses have increased. • The increase in disaster losses is primarily due to floods and storms. • Scientists have not yet attributed changes in floods and storms to human causes. However, ther...
متن کاملSimulation of economic losses from tropical cyclones in the years 2015 and 2050: the effects of anthropogenic climate change and growing wealth
This paper simulates the increase in the average annual loss from tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic for the years 2015 and 2050. The simulation is based on assumptions concerning wealth trends in the regions affected by the storms, considered by the change in material assets (capital stock). Further assumptions are made about the trend in storm intensity resulting from anthropogenic clima...
